My town had it’s lake festival a couple of weeks ago.
2週間前に町の湖水祭りがあった。

My choir sang a few songs in the morning.

Later, it was time for fireworks, I took this shot at 15 seconds to see how my focus was.

School festival day 1

We went to the old people’s home and the students danced for them. I loved the line up of old ladies in their hats.
生徒はおばあちゃんとおじいちゃんの前に踊った。 おばあちゃんのぼしはかわいい。

I got the picture of them throwing water balloons at each other.

Photo Challenge Day 9

March 9: Sweet Tooth

2013-03-09 13.46.56

This was the dessert we got after our delicious lunch. I had tea and some kind of pound cake.

Today I spent the day boarding with friends in Tomamu. I’m getting so much more confident with my turns, I started doing turns on the steeper bits of the hill and faster on the lower bits.

Of course, going faster sometimes means falling a bit more. I was trying to catch up to a friend who had fallen down and managed to catch my board on another friend’s board. I tipped, and was still moving as I fell.  I don’t know how it happened, but suddenly I found myself sliding down the hill head first, body just following a long as though I was on a slide. The whole thing didn’t hurt at all and was more funny than anything else. I finally managed to stop by spreading my limbs out and hoping the surface area would slow me down. It did. (Mom, dad and grandma: It was a bit of a surprise, but I was fine and I had my helmet on)

We had lunch in a cute little café near the hill. It turned out, my students’ parents were working in the café.

We boarded and boarded until almost 5:30, when everyone had plans in different directions.

On our second to last run of the day, I captured this:

After our boarding adventures finished, I headed back to town, to put on dry clothes, and head out to the earthquake tribute my town was having. I met up with a couple of other friends there.
They lit up one of the runs on the ski hill with a kanji. I’m not sure of the reading, I had it explained really well to me last year. But it seems to mean bond, emotional tie, a relationship or connection.

After that they set off the fireworks.

This is how my tiny town, does a tribute to the victims of the Tohoku Earthquake.

All in all, it was a fun filled day with a few different sets of friends.

Last day of year two

We started the day with a stop at my bagel shop.
Lake Festival 001

Then we headed to my town festival, my choir sang a few songs as a part of it.
Lake Festival 010

A couple of my friends hung out after we sang together.
Lake Festival 035

As we listened to music and watched the events on the stage, we met many of my students, most of whom I convinced to introduce themselves in English to my various friends. I was quite surprised to see how many people came out for this festival.

This group came for the evening – don’t worry none of them are missing any teeth, It’s just seaweed.

By dinner time, the crowd was huge, possibly more than the entire population of my town.
Lake Festival 054

The day ended with fireworks.

T
he lake fireworks were incredible, I’ve never seen a place light fireworks as though they are coming out of water.
Lake Festival 253

And the light “waterfall.” Also amazing, though possibly more so if the wind had been better at carrying the smoke away.

An amazing end to another year in Hokkaido. It will be fun to see what next year brings.

Happy Fourth of July!

Happy Fourth of July everyone!

Fireworks

At home, Fourth of July means barbeques, sunshine, fireworks and a day off to be spent with family and friends.

In Japan, on the other hand. It's just another day. I'll celebrate by going to the Junior High School and teaching English. It will probably be fun, but it's definitely a holiday I miss being home for.
