Another first

Yesterday I bought my first toothbrush in Japan. My dentist at home usually gives me a year's supply, but this toothbrush decided to give up after a couple of weeks. 

昨日始めての日本語の歯ブラシを買った。アメリカの歯医者からいつも1年のもらうけど、この2週間にわるくなった。

Look how tiny the new toothbrush is! I feel like I'm brushing with a kid's toothbrush. 

新しのが小さい！子供の歯ブラシ見たい。

Okinawa - Day 1

After a long day of trains, busses and airplanes, R and I finau made it to Okinawa at about 10 pm. 

長い旅行の後にRと10時ぐらい沖縄に着いた！

First, we had to see if the Convenience store had any Okinawa stuff to try. 

最初沖縄のコンビニに行った。

They did. We have Okinawa mystery tea, which turned out to be Jasmine tea. Yum! 

コンビニでこの不思議なお茶があった。ジャスミン茶の同じけど。

After we checked in, we had to find our way to the beach. What better way to celebrate arriving in Okinawa than dipping your toes in the ocean? 

ホテル行ってから海が見つけた！足だけ入れた。

Mini Volleyball Tournament

At the beginning of December, we had a mini-volleyball tournament in town, I was amazed at how many people showed up.

１２月の最初にミニバレー大会があった。たくさん人が来た。

In Japan, you know there’s a ton of people when all the shoe lockers are full.

ロッカーがいっぱいだったら、日本にはたくさん人がいる事がしてる。

Stuffed Kabocha

 My mom used to make sausage spinach loaf when I was a kid. I had a sudden idea to try making sausage-spinach stuffed kabocha. 

子供時にお母さんはソーセージとほうれんそうのパンを作った。パンの中にはほうれんそうとソーセージとチーズがあった。とても美味しかった。そう見たいのかぼちゃと考えた。

First, I cooked the kabocha a bit, so it would be easy to cut. 

切るのために５分ぐらい電池レンジで入った。

Next, I cut out the insides. 

次に中の物を取った。

Then I put rice and spinach in. 

次はご飯とほうれん草が入った。

After that, I added the meat. 

それから、肉が入った。

Then it was time to bake it and put cheese on top. It came out looking really good. 

最後にチーズを入って、焼いた。出った時に美味しそうと思った。

Of course, we wanted to see what was inside!

もちろん、中の物を見たかった！

It turned out really well, but the inside was savory and the kabocha was sweet. I think I'd do something curry flavored next time. 

美味しかったけど、かぼちゃは甘くて、中は甘くないから、多分次回に同じ事しないと思う。次回にカーレのを作るかも。

Coffee with friends

A couple of weeks ago, I went for coffee with some friends.

２・３週間前に友達たちと遊んだ。

J and the cutest baby in all of Japan came, too!

Jと日本にいる１番可愛い赤ちゃんも来ました。

Here’s the group of us girls. It was fun to have hang out with these lovely ladies.

Christmas music

After my post the other day, it finally snowed!

前のブログの後に雪が降った！

I love weather like this.

この天気が大好き。

I went to my school that was the farthest away and I listened to Christmas music the whole way there and the whole way back.

今日一番遠い学校へ行った。行って帰ってずっとクリスマスの音楽が聞いた。

I put my favorite Christmas songs on shuffle. I had forgotten how much I like this song.

大好きなクリスマスの音楽がシャッフルした。この歌があった事が忘れちゃった。

It’s such an amazing reminder that Christ came to die. But death couldn’t hold him. He lives. Reflecting on that all day has made me so thankful.

この歌からキリストの事思い出した。死んだのために生まれたけど、死ぬまで終わらなかった。よみがえられました。だから、今日ずっと感謝している。

Seems like a good way to spend Thanksgiving Day.
アメリカの感謝際にいいでしょう。

Dinner with friends

I went out with some ladies from my choir. 

合唱の女たちと夕食を食べた。

We decided to order onigiri as a part of our meal. They were shocked when I heard ume (pickled plum) and ordered it. It was delicious. I love ume. 

おにぎりを注文した。梅が来たすぐに決めった。皆びっくりした。美味しかった。梅が大好き。

Here are the ladies I had dinner with and then went to karaoke with. All but one of them are in choir with me and one of them is in my adult English class. 

このグループと夕食を食べてカラオケをした。３人は合唱の友達。１人は英会話の友達。

I don’t get it . . .

 It snows and it's cold. So the heaters get turned on. 

雪が降ったから、寒くなる。スートブがつける。

Then the room is too hot so the students open the windows. 

それから、教室は暑すぎるから、生徒は窓が開ける。

I don't get it. Why not just use a lower setting? 

全然分からない。低い温度の方がいいでしょう。

I’d wear them every day.

毎日履くと思う。

I did ask to trade with her. She didn’t like that idea.

この長靴を私の靴と交換すると聞いたけど。

T’s birthday

We went out to celebrate T’s birthday.

Tの誕生日から、皆夕食へ行った。

Unfortunately, her present wasn’t ready yet, so A and I bought some fun things to give her.

プレセントが終わらなかったから、楽しい事が買った。

The night started with just a small group of us girls.

最初に４人女の友達ｈが来た。

Later, the guys joined us.

後で男の友達も来た。

T’s birthday cake.

誕生日のケーキ。

Since T doesn’t like mushrooms, we decided to get her all the mushroom-shaped candy.

Tはきのこが嫌いから、全部きのこのあめが買った。

The whole group that came by the end. I got to meet one new friend that I’d only met on Facebook with there rest of the group.

最後の全員。１人Facebookだけ知ってた友達が会った。

After dinner, us girls went out for karaoke.

夕食の後に女の友達はカラオケへ行った。

It was a ton of fun, as everything I do with this group is.

Tの誕生日は楽しかったけど、このグループと何でも楽しいから、びっくりじゃない。

BOE Sobetsukai

Recently, M-san left the BOE to go work at the school lunch center. The BOE had a going away party for him.

最近、Mさんの送別会へ行った。Mさんの新しい仕事は給食センター。

The most awkward conversation of the evening: (if you’re reading the Japanese, theirs was definitely more fluent than I’m conveying right now)

気まずい雰囲気の時は：（多分私の覚えたの日本語より皆行った事の方がペラペラ）

How long have you been here now?

今ここで何年？

Me: I just started my 5th year.

私：５年目。

She’s thinking of staying longer.

彼女はもう少し日本に住みたいらしい。

We should find her a Japanese husband!

日本人のだんなさんを探しよう！

Anyone at the BOE?

教育委員会の人？

Nope.

ない。

Anyone at the JHS?

中学校で？

How about X-sensei?

X先生？

Me: No. (In my head, do they realize that this person is about twice my age???)

私：いいえ。（考えた事はこの人は二度私の年齢だ。皆これが分かる？？？）

Conversation changes.

会話が変わった。

Something I didn’t understand . . . marathon (which is basically any race in Japan).

分からない事　。。。マラソン。

Me: No I didn’t get to run the marathon this year.

私：いいえ。今年できなかった。

Superintendent: X-sensei. He runs marathons.

教育委長：X先生。マラソンを走る。

Me: X-sensei????

私：X先生？？？

Superintendent (in English): He’s a nice guy.

教育長（英語で）：He’s a nice guy.

Me: Um, you do realize he’s closer to my dad’s age than to mine, right?

私：X先生はお父さんの年齢のほうが近い。

(Note: X-sensei wasn’t present and has never expressed that kind of interest in me).

（X先生はいなかった。多分その事全然言わなかった。）

Sushi

 Went out for sushi with one of the new ALTs in the area recently.
最近富良野の地域の新しいALTとすしを食べた。

It was right before Halloween, so they had Halloween sushi. Isn't it cute?
ハロウィンの前から、ハロウィンのすしがあった。可愛いだよね。

We decided to try the octopus-kimchi sushi. It was really good.
キムチたこの寿司も食べた。とても美味しかった。

Of course, I ordered my favorite - eggplant. I love Japanese eggplant.
もちろん、大好きななすすしを食べた。日本のなすが大好き。

It was lots of fun. She was also a teacher in her past life (ie. before coming to Japan), so we get along really well.
とても楽しかった。このALTも日本来るの前に先生だったから、私たちは共通点が多いだね。
