Couch Surfers

After meeting at the Christmas concert the night before, I hosted my very first Couch Surfers from Taiwan.  

クリスマスライブで会ったの後にCouchSurfingの人が私の家に泊まった。この人は台湾人。たのしかった！

It was their first time ever seeing snow, they took a million photos of it - it was fun watching them.

雪が初めてから、たくさん写真を撮った。見る事が楽しかった。

Of course, we had to have one by the bagel shop. 

もちろん、べグルの店の近いの撮った。

We went for bagels - yum! 

べグルの店へ行った。

待ちる時に。

If you order bread,  you get jam. I'd never had it, it was yummy. 

パンを注文したら、ジャムももらった。注文をしたことないけど、美味しかった。

They talked the bagel guy into letting us behind the counter. I'd never even thought to ask before! 

皆と写真を撮った。

Hosting Couch Surfers was a lot of fun! 

とても楽しい人だった。

Snow!

Today, we had a ton of snow. When I got home, this is what I had to drive through in the parking lot. I had to stop and back up again a few times to get into my garage. 

今日たくさん雪が降った。帰った時にこの雪が駐車場であった。すごい！

Too bad the town ski hill won't open till next week. 

残念な事は町のスキー場が来週に開ける。

Fun in Furano

I went into Furano with a friend a few weeks ago. As I came over the pass to meet her, this was the view.

２・３週間前に友達と富良野へ行った。峠にこの眺めが見えた。

It was super foggy in Furano that day. Also, there were elephants.

富良野で霧が多かった。そして、象があった！ 

This was the view as we headed to the onsen.
温泉へ行った中にこれが見えた。

More of that beautiful fog.
霧が綺麗だね。

Why is there an exclamation mark? There is no explanation, not even in Japanese . . .
なぜこれ！がある？説明がない。

After the drive, we made it up to the highest onsen in all of Japan! 
運転の後に温泉へ行った。

When we got to the outdoor bath, I realized we could see the parking lot (and they could see us). 
露天風呂へ行って、駐車場が見える事が分かった。そして、駐車場で居る人も私たちが見える。

The water was really dark, so we just stayed low at first and then moved a bit. 
お湯で見えないから、最初に低いでいた。

After we'd moved, an older woman came along. 
この後におばあちゃんは来た。

I said, "We can see the parking lot from here."
私は「ここから駐車場が見える」と言いた。

She replied, "I'm old, I'm not shy."
おばあちゃんは「恥ずかしくない」と言いた。

After the onsen, we went for lunch. This was the view from the restaurant.
温泉の後に昼食へ行った。レストランからこれが見えた。

We had fondue!
フォンデュをたべた。

While we were eating, a rainbow appeared for just a couple of minutes. I was glad my cell phone was handy.
食べる時に虹が見たけど、速かった。携帯が会った事が良かった。

After lunch, we went for dessert. Yum!
昼食の後にデザートを食べた。美味しかった。

The sound of snow

I love the sound my feet make walking through freshly fallen snow. 

雪に歩く中に足音が好き。

After my post the other day, it finally snowed!

前のブログの後に雪が降った！

I love weather like this.

この天気が大好き。

I went to my school that was the farthest away and I listened to Christmas music the whole way there and the whole way back.

今日一番遠い学校へ行った。行って帰ってずっとクリスマスの音楽が聞いた。

I put my favorite Christmas songs on shuffle. I had forgotten how much I like this song.

大好きなクリスマスの音楽がシャッフルした。この歌があった事が忘れちゃった。

It’s such an amazing reminder that Christ came to die. But death couldn’t hold him. He lives. Reflecting on that all day has made me so thankful.

この歌からキリストの事思い出した。死んだのために生まれたけど、死ぬまで終わらなかった。よみがえられました。だから、今日ずっと感謝している。

Seems like a good way to spend Thanksgiving Day.
アメリカの感謝際にいいでしょう。

Where's the snow?

It's almost December. In Hokkaido. 

今すぐ12月になる。北海度で。

Usually we've had enough snow to open the two ski resorts nearby.

だいたいこの頃にたくさん雪が降った。

We had that freak typhoon snow storm, by there is no snow on the ground now. 

びっくり台風の雪が降ったけど、今外で雪がない。

What's wrong with Hokkaido? 

なぜ？

I'm ready to escape this Portland-like winter. My snowboard is ready. 

このポートランドみたい冬が終わり欲しい！ボードの準備ができた。

Last day of the produce stand

My produce stand closed and I went for their annual party and last day of shopping.

野菜の店は閉めて、毎年のパーティと最後の買い物の日へ行った。

I was surprised at how many trees had fallen in the big snow storm.
吹雪にたくさん倒木があった。

On the way I saw this. I hate those power lines, they’re in a place that would be perfect for photos otherwise. Grr!

途中にこれが見た。この電線が大嫌い。なかったら、とてもいい写真ができる。

So many people came to shop one last time before the shop closed for the season.

たくさん人は最後の日へ行った。

Last Sea of Clouds for the year

K and I went for the last sea of clouds adventure for the year.

Kと今年の最後の雲海へ行って見た。

We got there an hour before the gondola even opened . . . oops!

１時間早過ぎた！間違った！

We did end up being the second group in line.

２番目のグループけど。

The sun rise was stunning!

日の出は綺麗だった。

There was even snow that time. When we looked at Tomamu’s twitter, it looked like the last time the gondola was actually open, was the day we went up. There was a bit of a typhoon that week causing a crazy amount of snow.

雪が降った。トマムのサイトで前の時からずっと閉まった。台風し、強い風し、多い雪し。

Love being able to make the light split like this.

このよう太陽の写真ができる事が好き。

They’ve been doing construction all summer. I wonder what they’re doing.

夏にずっと工事した。何するでしょう？

Surprise snow storm, day 1

8 am Leave for school. Notice the snow has started early, but there’s not enough to take a picture. Use neighbor’s car for contrast.

8時　学校へ行く。雪は早い始まった。少ないから、写真に見えないから、近所の黒い車の前に写真を撮る。

8:40 On the way to 1st period, stop for a picture of the gorgeous tree in the tiny amount of snow.

8時40分　1時間目へ行く。雪が見えるから、写真を撮る。

10:30 After 2nd period. First years, you have the best view of this gorgeous tree. Also, look at all that snow.

10時半　2時間目が終わった。1年生は一番いい眺めがある。この木はとてもきれい。そして、雪が積もっています。

12:40 pm Electricity goes out again, comes back on quickly.

12時40分　2回目の停電、はやい終わり。

2 pm Electricity goes out

14時　停電

2:30 pm Class started 20 minutes ago, teacher wasn’t paying any attention, with no bells to remind her, she didn’t notice.

14時半　授業は20分前に始まったけど、先生は時計が見えなかった。チャイムがなかった。

3 pm Busses and trains are cancelled, how are we getting the students home?

15時　バスと電車は中止した。生徒と富良野に住んでいる先生はどう帰る？

3:45 pm Bus has snow tires now, kids can go home.

15時45分　バスのタイヤが変わった。生徒は帰る。

4 pm Teachers go home. My car is covered in snow, I’m not wearing snow clothes. I-sensei, can I get a ride to the convenience store? (It’s close to my house).

16時　先生は帰る。　私の車で雪積もるし、冬の服を着ないし、I先生はコンビニまで運転する。

4:15 pm Arrive at I-sensei’s house. He forgot about me. Can I help with changing the tires? No, go inside and play with the kids.

16時15分　I先生の家に着いた。　I先生は私が忘れちゃった。男の先生たちはタイヤの変わるの始まる。手伝える事が聞いたけど、子供たちと家で遊ぶ。

4:55 pm The tires are changed.

16時55分　タイヤが変わった。

5:05 pm Arrive home. Find a flashlight and light a candle. Remember the large, camping flashlight that I spotted this morning.

17時05分　家は着いた。　懐中電灯と蝋燭が探す。　朝に見たの大きいキャンプの懐中電灯が思い出す。

6 pm Pull dinner out of the refrigerator. Luckily, one of my choir friends made me dinner yesterday and it’s still cold. Thankfully, it doesn’t require any heat.

18時　冷蔵庫から夕食を食べる。昨日合唱の友達から夕食がもらった。コンロが要らないけど、寒い。

6:30 pm Finish my cold dinner and wish I had a way to make hot tea. Then, remember the hand warmers I have for winter.

18時半　寒い夕食が終わった。　お茶を飲みたいから、お湯が欲しい。　カイロがあった事思い出す。

7 pm Find out school is cancelled tomorrow.

19時　明日に学校が中止と聞いた。

7:10 pm Find out school is cancelled for the students.

19時10分　生徒だけ明日に学校が中止と聞いた。

Surprise snow storm, day 2

6:15 am Wake up

6時15分　起きる。

6:45 am  Find out that school is starting at 9:10 and teachers from Furano aren’t coming.

6時45分　先生は9時10分学校へ行く。富良野の先生は来ない。

7:15 am After 17 hours, the electricity's back. Plug in the iphone!

7時15分　17時間の後に停電が終わった！携帯のコンセントを差し込んでいる！

8:50 am Leave for school.

8時50分　家から出る。

8:52 am Cross the bridge. Gosh it’s pretty!

8時52分　きれいだよ！

9 am Cross the train tracks. They’re never not cleared. The train is definitely cancelled today.

9時　電車線。除雪なかった。ぜひ電車が中止。

9:10 Arrive at school. Take a photo from the same location as yesterday.

9時10分　学校に着く。　昨日の同じ所から写真を撮る。

11:20 Borrow a shovel to clear the snow in front of my car.

11時20分　車の前に雪かき。

12:10 Go out for lunch with two teachers because we want something warm to eat.

12時10分　2人先生と暖かい食べ物を食べたいから、レストランへ行く。

12:30 pm  The electricity goes out again.

12時30分　停電

1:10 pm Back to school.

13時10分　学校へ戻る。

1:30 pm Find a sunny window to sit and read in.

13時30分　太陽の窓の下に読んでいる。

3 pm Go to the community center to set up for tomorrow. What? They have electricity?

15時　明日の準備のためにみなくるへ行く。ええ？停電じゃない？

4:20 pm Go to the supermarket. They’re out of batteries for my big flashlight. Buy a bunch of the ones for the small flashlight and re-charging my phone. Also, “food” I can eat without cooking.

16時20分　スーパへ行く。　大きい電池がないけど、小さいのがある　（携帯と小さい懐中電灯のため）　そして、料理が要らない食べ物。

4:30 pm Go home. The electricity is working. Charge my iphone!

16時半　帰る。　停電が終わった。　携帯のコンセントを差し込んでいる！

5 pm Go to the convenience store – maybe they have the batteries for my big flashlight?

5時　コンビニへ行く。　大きい懐中電灯の電池がある？

5:10 pm The convenience store has no batteries.

5時10分　コンビニは電池がぜんぜんない。
