Small Shrine Festival

Earlier this month, one of my smaller areas in town had their shrine festival. One of the teachers invited me to come and it was a lot of fun.

9月に神社祭へ行った。E先生は誘って、楽しかった。

The first night we just had a barbecue and hung out.

最初の夕方に焼肉した。

The second day, I went out in the afternoon after my classes had finished.

2日目に昼から。でも、私は授業が終わったら、行った。

I missed something in the early afternoon, but I arrived in time for floor curling. When I arrived, one of my students was telling me that his team was going to win . . .

着いた時に皆はフロアカーリングをしていた。生徒は「私のチームはぜひ勝つ」と言ったけど、

. . . I ended up on his team and we were either last or second to last.

私はその生徒のチームにいた。私たちは6番目か5番目にいた。

These three were the judges.

この3人は審判した。

After the afternoon of sports – floor curling and mini volleyball, there was a party in the community center.

スーポツの後にパティがあった。

I ended up sitting between one of my students’ very sleepy younger sisters and an empty chair. I was thankful when one of the super friendly moms came over and started talking to me.

生徒のとても眠い妹と空椅子の間に座ることになった。優しいお母さんは来て話したことうれしかった。

My kids played taiko. They are so good at it!

生徒はたいこした。とても上手だった！

They carried around the mikoshi (festival float). It was vegetables, quite fitting for this farm community.

みこしがあった。野菜のいいね！

After that, it was time for karaoke. E-sensei had a song and dance for us.

カラオケがあった。E先生は歌って踊った。

Lots of other people sang.

たくさん人は歌った。

This person sang a song that lots of people knew the dance to.

この人はたくさん人が踊る歌が歌った。

And of course, we played bingo. Paper products are Japan’s favorite bingo prize. Look at all that toilet paper.

もちろん、ビンゴした。紙製品は日本の大好きな賞だね。

It was a fun festival.

祭りが楽しかった。

Summer Adventures: Numata Andon Festival

I met up with friends to hang out and go to the Numata Andon Festival.

友達と沼田町のあんどん祭りのため集まった。

Before the festival, we went out to lunch at an Italian place in town.

祭りの前にイタリアのレストランに昼食を食べた。

R and I shared this pizza. We decided we needed to try it because it was called ‘The Pizza,’ which means it ought to be amazing, right?

Rとこのピーザを食べた。「The Pizza」と言ったから、ぜひとても美味しいと思た。

After pizza, we had to stop at the ice cream shop across the road.

ピーザの後に近いアイスの店へ行った。

RとAはアイスを食べる。Aの味は何でしょう？ぜひあの味を食べたくない。

The sink in Uryu’s Michi-no-Eki. It does everything – wash, soap and dry.

We made it to the festival!

祭り！

An interesting food that wasn’t tako-yaki and wasn’t okonomiyaki.

面白い食べ物だった。お好み焼きじゃなくて、たこ焼きじゃないでも、何か分からない。

It looked like it might rain, so at first, everything was covered in plastic.

Anpanman decided to join the festival.

The dragons even breathe smoke!

竜の頭から煙を出る。

While they smash the floats, people are standing on them.

R and I got to dance on the front of this float.

私とRはこので踊りできた！

This guy was just sitting below the float watching.

この人はあんどんの下で座って踊りが見る。

R and I made a new friend. She danced with us on the float.

私とRの新しいの友達。一緒にあんどんで踊った。

The mayor gave a speech. But he was so old that he needed the help of 3 people to get up and down.

町長はあんどんで発表した。でも3人の手伝うこと必要だった。

A friend told us about this festival 2 years ago. I’m glad we finally made it.

2年前に友達はこの祭りを教えってくれた。今年行ってできたことうれしい！

Summer Adventures: Kamishihoro Hot Air Balloon Festival

After making food to take with us a few nights before, K and I headed out to Kamishihoro for their Hot Air Balloon festival.

前の日に持って来る食べ物を作ったの後にKと上士幌の気球祭りへ行った。

Unfortunately, the wind was too strong and they couldn’t keep the balloons up for very long. This meant no hot air balloon rides.

風が強すぎたから、気球を乗らなかった。

They had quite a crowd wanting a ride though.

たくさん乗りたい人がいた。

This woman was making Taiyaki shaped like hot air balloons.

気球の形があるたいやき。

The front of her stand was super cute.

かわいい。

Before going, K and I had a long discussion about “Food Ba-ray.”

行くの前Kと私はフードバレーについて話した。

Me: Food ba-ray? (thinking volleyball)

私：フードバレー？（バレーボールのイメージが考えた）。

K: do you want to try it, it’s 100 yen for each try.

K：して見る？1回は100円。

Me: umm, no. It sounds messy. Just watching is ok.

私：いいえ、汚いでしょう。見るだけでいい。

Me: Switching a volleyball for food sounds really messy.

私：バールの変わりに食べ物は汚いよね。

K: Not volleyball.

K:バレーボールじゃない。

Me: Oh. Dance? (like ballet – they had dancing food at Tokyo Disney).

私：踊り？（東京のディズニーランドで食べ物の踊りが会った）。

K: No.

K：いいえ。

Me: Then what does Ba-ray mean?

私：この場合にバレーの意味は？

K: Ba-ray like Silicon Ba-ray.

K：シリコンバレー見たい。

Me: Oh, valley. But what do you do at a food valley?

私：Valley.　食べ物のValleyで何する？

Turns out, it’s a chance to try making the food.

説明の後に分かったことは食べ物を作って見る所。

My sister’s birthday present. They were so pretty.

妹の誕生日のためにこれ買った。とてもきれい。

Since we couldn’t go up in a balloon or watch people go up, we headed out to Nukabira to eat our lunch and see their lake.

気球を乗らなかったから、糠平へ行った。糠平で昼ご飯を食べて、湖を見った。

We ate lunch sitting here, looking at the lake.

ここで湖が見る間に昼ご飯を食べた。

It was a beautiful day.

天気が良くて、所がきれい。

As we headed off, we inquired as to what the building next to the lake was. Turns out it was a hammock café.

帰る中に湖の近い建物の人がいたから、この建物は何を聞いた。実はハンモックカフェ。

After that, we headed out to see if we could see one of the old bridges in town. We got there just in time.

この後に古い橋が見えて見る。

There it is again.

きれい。

We got back just in time to watch them light up the balloons for the night show.

橋を見るの後に夜の気球を見に行った。

Unfortunately the wind was still really strong.

夜にも風は強かった。

Only the Hokkaido Newspaper’s balloon got lit up, and it took quite a few people to hold it down.

北海道新聞のしかなかった。たくさん人は持っている。

So they lit up all the burners for all the balloons.

バーナーを付けた。

There were a lot of people out taking photos of the balloons.

たくさん人は写真を撮った。

人がいっぱいいた。

Everyone had their camera up to their face.

皆カメラがあった。
