Teachers' Mini Volleyball Tournament

Tonight we had a mini volleyball tournament for the teachers. (Sorry it’s a terrible cell phone picture).

It was a lot of fun.

Here’s my team, ‘no hands . . . oh wait, hospitality’ playing. (I kept mixing up those words in Japanese. )

2013-11-29 17.26.31

We took 8th place, out of 9 teams. Considering my team took last place last year, I consider this a move up in the world.

I put my favorite Christmas songs on shuffle. I had forgotten how much I like this song.

It’s such an amazing reminder that Christ came to die. But death couldn’t hold him. He lives. Reflecting on that all day has made me so thankful.

Seems like a good way to spend Thanksgiving Day.

Where's the snow?

It's almost December. In Hokkaido.

Usually we've had enough snow to open the two ski resorts nearby.

We had that freak typhoon snow storm, by there is no snow on the ground now.

What's wrong with Hokkaido?

I'm ready to escape this Portland-like winter. My snowboard is ready.

Dinner with friends

I went out with some ladies from my choir.

We decided to order onigiri as a part of our meal. They were shocked when I heard ume (pickled plum) and ordered it. It was delicious. I love ume.

Busy day

Today was a super busy day. I had no time to sit down and write a blog. Instead, I'm drinking tea and working on my homework. At least it's a pretty mug!

Six years ago, today

Another year. Another year full of events you should have been here for.

6 years ago, today.
Just one day earlier you came in the door and showed off your new glasses. You were so excited.

Just over 24 hours later, you were gone.

Despite that, it occurred to me this week, if I hadn’t had issues and had to re-do student teaching, I wouldn’t have gotten the chance to live with you before you left us. I would have likely been in Japan when I got the news.

Even though we argued sometimes and had differences in opinions often, I’m glad I got to spend the last few months of your life as your roommate.

I’m thankful for our years of Girl Scouts together.

Cara1

The years of picking on our little sisters.

Cara2

The summers spent in your swimming pool.

The winter when we got a ton of snow and we were actually able to build a snow man.

Cara3

So many good memories. I wish we could have more, but I’m thankful for the ones we had.

BOE Sobetsukai

Recently, M-san left the BOE to go work at the school lunch center. The BOE had a going away party for him.

2013-11-06 BOE Sobetsukai 002

The most awkward conversation of the evening: (if you’re reading the Japanese, theirs was definitely more fluent than I’m conveying right now)

How long have you been here now?

Me: I just started my 5th year.

She’s thinking of staying longer.

Anyone at the BOE?

Nope.
ない。

Anyone at the JHS?

How about X-sensei?
X先生?

Me: No. (In my head, do they realize that this person is about twice my age???)

Conversation changes.

Something I didn’t understand . . . marathon (which is basically any race in Japan).

Me: No I didn’t get to run the marathon this year.

Superintendent: X-sensei. He runs marathons.

Me: X-sensei????
私:X先生???

Superintendent (in English): He’s a nice guy.
He’s a nice guy.

Me: Um, you do realize he’s closer to my dad’s age than to mine, right?

(Note: X-sensei wasn’t present and has never expressed that kind of interest in me).

Sushi

Went out for sushi with one of the new ALTs in the area recently.

It was right before Halloween, so they had Halloween sushi. Isn't it cute?

2013-10-26 18.11.11

We decided to try the octopus-kimchi sushi. It was really good.

2013-10-26 18.34.00

Of course, I ordered my favorite - eggplant. I love Japanese eggplant.

It was lots of fun. She was also a teacher in her past life (ie. before coming to Japan), so we get along really well.

Fall colors near the lake

After one of my elementary school visits, I had to drive down the lake road. The fall colors were stunning.

I've considered stopping here many times before, but never have. I'm so glad I did this time.
