Okinawa, day 3

We woke up early this morning to capture some sunrise photos. Unfortunately, there wasn't much of a sunrise.

After that, we headed off to Taketomi Island for the morning. Our main goal was to ride a glass-bottomed boat and see some fish.

Here we are on the boat.

After we came back, we went driving around Ishigaki Island. It was a grey, Oregon-like day. But it wasn't hot and we had fun.

We saw Shurijo.

We also flew to Ishigaki.

We arrived with a few hours until sunset and decided to try to go see it. Unfortunately it was cloudy.

Even though we couldn't see it, the beach was beautiful.

A day in Muroran

Today, I visited my friends in Muroran. We went to do hanami (flower viewing) in a nearby park with a college international club. The students were from all over Asia and a super fun group to hang with. There were only about 6 flowers in the park though.

This is Ai, her name means love. I told her she was cute and she adopted me as her sister. Her dad is actually from my tiny town!

We also found my favorite seasonal ice cream at the convenience store. This means my birthday is coming!

Mom & Em visit Kamakura 2

On our second day in Kamakura, we rented bikes and road around Kamakura. It was one of Em’s favorite things on the whole visit.

Our first stop was Hasedera Temple, just a few blocks up from the beach.

I found this little pond interesting. It had the swastika shape, but Japan doesn't use it like the rest of the world, it’s one of the markers for temples or shrines on maps. The lake had that shape.

2012-07-06 2012-07-06 Kamakura 010_thumb

You can kind-of see it’s interesting shape here.

2012-07-06 2012-07-06 Kamakura 011_thumb

I’m not sure what these guys are for, but I find the lines and lines of them fascinating.

2012-07-06 2012-07-06 Kamakura 013_thumb

I loved how green Kamakura was.

2012-07-06 2012-07-06 Kamakura 019_thumb

Ajisai (Hydrangea)! It was one of my new words while we were in Kamakura.

2012-07-06 2012-07-06 Kamakura 023_thumb

I’m not sure why the ones in Japan have this different shape, but I think it makes them more photogenic than the American ones that end up being a big ball.

2012-07-06 2012-07-06 Kamakura 024_thumb

The statues at the temples and shrines have a very interesting texture after sitting out in the weather year-round.

The view, which would have been much better if it hadn't been so cloudy.

2012-07-06 2012-07-06 Kamakura 027_thumb

At this temple, we found a very cool shrine that went into the mountain. It was a tunnel shrine.

Here it is from inside.

2012-07-06 2012-07-06 Kamakura 037_thumb

After walking all around that temple, we were hungry so we went for Okonomiyaki and Yakisoba.
The fun of this type of shop is you get to make your own, right on the table.

2012-07-06 2012-07-06 Kamakura 038_thumb

After lunch we found the beach and played in true Oregonian style, in the rain.

2012-07-06 2012-07-06 Kamakura 040_thumb

Mom and Em needed combini pics. Mom’s got Ume (plumb) soda.

2012-07-06 2012-07-06 Kamakura 041_thumb

And Em found an “American Dog.” This growing kid was so-so on
many Japanese foods, but we couldn't ever seem to feed her too much.

2012-07-06 2012-07-06 Kamakura 042_thumb

After some more bike riding, we made it to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine.

Some shots of the temple as we walked up to it.

We managed to find ourselves at the temple on Tanabata, so the trees were decorated for the holiday.

2012-07-06 2012-07-06 Kamakura 055_thumb

I love all the intricate folding that goes into Origami.

A few more shots of the area around the temple.

This was Em’s favorite part of every temple we visited – it was hot and getting a bit wet always felt really good.

The many faces of Em.

But I knew if I waited long enough, I’d get that cute smile.

The fortunes always make interesting photos.
